Rame Gig Club’s crews take part in several events
The Newquay Men’s County Championships were postponed until the 30th September, due to weather/sea conditions. Rame entered one crew which consisted of 3 x U/16’s, 2 x 17yr olds and not forgetting the one Vet rower. (photo 2 Rame are in “TARAN”)
The sea conditions were “LUMPY”, with drizzly rain all day. This however did not deter the crew, they went through to the 2nd round finishing 26th out of 72 crews, overall. A brilliant effort by them as for most, if not all, this was their 1st Newquay Championships.
On Saturday 7th October the U/14’s & U/16’s took part in the Cross Keys Challenge. The youngsters had a great day although the weather, once again, was not in their favour. They were split into groups and then took part in gig racing (photo 1), kayak/canoe racing, tug of war and many more challenges. The overall winners were Team Penlee. A very grateful thank you must go to Geoff and Isobel (Cross Keys) for supplying all the medals and trophies also Gloria and Ian (Shop in the Square) for supplying the youngsters with hot drinks.
The weekend of Saturday 14th October saw the club attend 2 events. The first was the Tamar Challenge.
A 9 mile race from Saltash to Cotehele. Rame had 2 crews in this race a Vets Crew and a Super Vets Crew. Competition was fierce, especially between these 2 crews!! The results, in their category, were Super Vets 2nd and Vets 3rd (photo 4).
One Ladies crew (photo 3) travelled to the Appledore Supervet’s Regatta for the weekend. They were delighted to get through to the semi-finals, only to be stopped in their tracks (literally) by a sandbar.
Halfway through the course as all 6 gigs came up to the 1st mark, Rame were flying the cox was shouting to the inside gigs “give water” but to no avail as the 3 inside gigs hit the sandbar. The crew battled on in a very close run race.
All that said the crew had a great weekend and are hoping to go back next year. (RP)
